Wikipedia vs Wikidata for a Company Profile: What Each Accepts

English guide for SEO teams: how Wikipedia and Wikidata tests differ, and what company facts to publish on your own site first.

If you run SEO for a company and buyers check the brand in search and AI answers, you may ask whether to aim for Wikipedia or Wikidata. They are separate projects with separate rules. For most teams, the first useful step is to publish a consistent, checkable set of facts on the company's own website.

Direct answer: different tests, no fixed order

English Wikipedia company entries depend on significant coverage in multiple qualified independent secondary sources. Wikidata uses three separate inclusion paths and is not a second step after Wikipedia. Neither result can be bought or guaranteed.

How the two tests differ

  • Wikipedia: a narrative article for human readers. It asks whether others have already published in-depth, independent coverage about this company.
  • Wikidata: an item of structured statements and identifiers. It can rest on a valid sitelink, a clearly identifiable entity described by serious public references, or a structural need for other items.
  • Your own site: it does not count as independent coverage for Wikipedia, but it can support some Wikidata statements and gives editors and readers one version to check.

Passing one test does not grant the other. An existing Wikidata item is not proof that a Wikipedia article is possible.

What to publish on your official site first

Before drafting anything for either project, make the official record easy to find and quote:

  • Names and relationships: legal name, brand, approved short forms, former names, official domain and language versions.
  • Current company facts: what the business does, locations, products and services, and public identifiers where they exist.
  • Product facts with conditions: specifications with units, scope, exclusions and effective dates, so an old parameter does not keep circulating.
  • Contacts and correction route: who handles sales, support and press, and where the official version lives.

Audit public mentions from the last three years and mark independence, depth about your company, and named authorship. If independent coverage is thin, publish verifiable work first rather than resubmitting a draft. If an existing entry is wrong, use the talk-page request route with disclosure and a source.

Where Guangsuan fits

Guangsuan's global GEO service works on official-site technical adaptation and brand entity relationships so customers can check products and official information. The work covers crawl access, rendering, canonical addresses and content discovery, plus brand fact lists, entity relationships and official entry checks. See the global brand-word GEO service scope and the guide on Wikipedia and Wikidata inclusion rules.

Being crawlable is not the same as being cited, and no permanent identical answer on all platforms is promised.

FAQ

Can our company create its own Wikipedia page?

No. A company should not add itself. An article depends on existing independent coverage and is decided by volunteer editors.

Should we start with Wikidata?

There is no single order for every entity. If an item already qualifies, add referenced facts. If it does not qualify, do not create a promotional placeholder.

Do we need either listing before AI assistants describe us correctly?

No. An open knowledge base is one external source among many. Keep names, specifications and the official domain consistent on your own site, which is also where a correction can start.
